Windows NT 4.0 Server Upgrade Guide 108
Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0
IIS 6.0 is a complete Web server available in all versions of Windows Server 2003. With IIS 6.0,
organizations of all sizes can quickly and easily deploy powerful Web sites and applications. IIS
6.0 provides a high-performance platform for applications built using the .NET Framework.
Through IIS 6.0, organizations can also benefit from opportunities for server consolidation as well
as reduced system downtime. Compared to earlier versions, IIS 6.0 improves Web site and
application availability, helping organizations to lower system administration costs while improving
Web server security.
Upgrading to IIS 6.0 provides other advantages as well. IIS 6.0 features a new fault-tolerant
process architecture with health monitoring that runs all application code in an isolated
environment for maximum dependability and availability. Web server administration is simplified
using an XML-based configuration file that can be modified without having to stop and restart the
server. IIS 6.0 enhancements, such as kernel-mode caching and processor affinity, dramatically
increase the scalability and performance compared to previous versions of IIS. In addition, IIS 6.0
is not installed by default with Windows Server 2003 and is first installed with the highest security
settings to help reduce the attack surface area.
This section discusses the IIS 6.0 features that have the greatest impact on server consolidation
in the following areas:
Features that increase the reliability of the overall Web application architecture and the availability
to users of Web sites and applications hosted on that architecture.
Manageability features that simplify Web server administration, whether script-based or GUI-
based.
Scalability features that maximize the use of existing and planned hardware technologies and
capabilities.
Security features that help reduce the vulnerability to attack and help provide security in building
and deploying Web applications.
IIS 6.0 Reliability and Availability
IIS 6.0 has been completely redesigned with a new fault-tolerant process architecture that boosts
the reliability of Web sites and applications. In previous versions of the product, the failure of a
single Web application might cause the failure of other Web sites and applications on the same
server. IIS 6.0 isolates Web sites and applications into self-contained units called application
pools, separate from the other applications that are hosted on the same server. One or more
distinct Windows worker processes serve each application pool. Worker processes operate
independently, so if they fail, they do not affect other worker processes. The pooling of
applications protects them from the effects of worker processes that support other application
pools and protects each application from the other. The fault-tolerant architecture of IIS 6.0
increases the overall reliability of a Web server infrastructure, increases the availability of Web
sites and applications, and increases the number of separate Web sites and applications that can
run on a single server.
