Server Upgrade Checklists
The following checklists can be helpful in creating a well-formulated upgrade plan that includes a
hardware analysis and evaluates the appropriate server migration order. For more information
about applications compatibility issues, see Assessing Application Compatibility
later in this
document.
Windows NT Server 4.0 to Windows Server 2003 Checklists
Assess and Document Existing Environment Phase
Do initial tasks:
Determine supported software upgrades for Windows NT 4.0 servers
Identify computers that can be upgraded
Identify computers to decommission
Document the existing domain structure and domain controller assignments:
Topology
Network connections
Servers in the domain
Services being provided
Members of the Domain Administrator global group
Number of users in the domain
Workstation operating systems
Any other resources provided in the domain such as printer service or fax service
Create a diagram of the existing Windows NT 4.0 domain. Include the following in the
diagram:
Domain name
Names of servers in the domain
Number of domain controllers in the domain
Trust relationships that the domain shares with other domains
Document how the existing domain controllers are currently assigned, including items
such as:
Computer names
Network information such as IP addresses and subnet masks
Services that are provided
Document the planned Windows Server 2003 network structure, including:
